Erwin PreSchool (EPS), established in1959, maintains a tradition of providing a safe, loving, child-centered learning environment for early learners. The school is in the heart of the Westcott/Syracuse University community and serves Syracuse area preschoolers. EPS is operated by Erwin First United Methodist Church and operates partially independently (by tuition and private donations), and as a contracted Universal PreK site with the Syracuse City School District.
The Preschool Director is responsible for all aspects of operating a preschool program for children ages 3 years through pre-kindergarten. This includes leadership of marketing and advertisement, staff recruitment, child enrollment processes, curriculum development, classroom management, staff development, licensing regulations, and preschool finance.
Essential Job Functions
Lead a team of teachers and other staff in day-to-day operation and routine special family and community events that promote the program.
Recruit and train teachers and other staff.
Ensure compliance with all state and local licensing regulations.
Collaborate with Erwin First United Methodist Church clergy and members to creatively link its neighborhood mission with EPS and the Syracuse community.
Establish an enrollment process that ensures children are enrolled efficiently, coordinating Erwin PreSchool registration with the Syracuse City School District Universal Prekindergarten enrollment requirements.
Function as primary contact person for parents/guardians on enrollment, assimilation, progress, and all other matters pertaining to the preschool. Update and distribute the Erwin PreSchool Parent handbook, including the Health Plan, yearly and as needed.
Ensure each classroom staff develops and maintains a child-centered, play-based, nurturing, and safe environment. As an agency for the Syracuse City School District the director ensures that staff is facilitating engaging, age-appropriate activities which align with the Syracuse City School early childhood curriculum and NYS Preschool standards. Ensure classroom staff is using observational/authentic assessment within the child’s natural setting.
Implement classroom management practices that ensure a safe, secure, positive, and orderly preschool environment is maintained.
Regularly monitor, evaluate, and develop preschool staff ensuring a “continuous learning” culture is developed and fostered and that classroom management practices are continuously improved. Ensure the staff is maintaining all child progress documentation, as required by the Syracuse City School District.
Develop policies, procedures, and programs and ensure that these policies are carried out appropriately.
Ensure that the preschool meets all the rules and regulations of Erwin PreSchool, Office of Children and Family Services, and the Syracuse City School Districts.
Keep detailed, updated records of both students and teachers.
Develop an annual budget and annual reports.
Allocate funds to different programs of the preschool. Purchase equipment and materials used by the preschool, as well as pay all bills, including payroll.
Serve as a liaison between EPS and Erwin First United Methodist Church in matters of facilities, finance, staff relations, and other functions.
Develop and implement a marketing/advertisement plan that creates interest in the preschool and fuels strong enrollment.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
This position requires a minimum of 2 years teaching in a classroom setting and 1 to 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education, and NYS Teacher Certification is required. The successful individual will be a strong leader with a solid work ethic, possess a passion for teaching children, and can function as an administrator. The Director must possess excellent verbal skills, exceptional organizational and time-management. In addition, exceptional customer services skills are necessary along with the ability to be proactive in retaining children and staff. Knowledge of creative programming related to children’s classes and special events is a real plus.

Universal Pre-K Teacher Erwin PreSchool
Engaging educator to responsibly manage the full-day Universal PreKingergarten classroom in accordance with the goals of Erwin PreSchool, Syracuse City School District, and with the NY State Education Department Pre-K guidelines.
Plan and implement the daily classroom program as directed by the Syracuse City School District and Erwin PreSchool as they relate to all children enrolled in the program. Individualized, age-appropriate activities following NYS Early Learning Standards, the Common Core,
Second Step Social-Emotional Curriculum, and SCSD Math Modules.
Use a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, demonstrating, open-ended questioning, and reinforcing.
Ensure that all activities offered are carried out in a safe and efficient manner.
Demonstrates the ability to provide engaging play-based, age-appropriate, discovery centers with intentionality, efficient management, and flexibility which support the CKLA Learning Domains.
Accurately maintain daily attendance records and digitally submitting them to the SCSD.
Request appropriate equipment, curriculum materials, and supplies to support the curriculum.
Support and enforce classroom and center policies.
Provide positive guidance to children that include positive language, positive reinforcement, and redirecting.
Keeps classroom neat, organized and inviting for children and families.
Evaluate the performance of the children in the program in all areas of development, using formal and informal assessment tools.
Bachelor's/Master's in Early Childhood Education.
NYS Teacher Certification ECE-2- or- plan/willingness to earn within 3 years
At least 2 years of relevant classroom experience.
Ability and comfort with computer use for lesson plans, assessments, attendance other required paperwork.
Excellent parent/coworker communication and confidentiality is a must.
